Sesame is one of the oldest known oilseed crops and is indigenous to India and parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The crop is known to be resistant to severe climactic conditions including drought, and has the highest oil content as compared to any other seed. It has a rich, nutty flavor and has hence been used for cooking as well as in cosmetics.

In Ayurveda, Sesame Oil is known as “Til” oil. The rich, nutritious oil has been used since Vedic times and the oil is considered the most superior of all oils by Charaka, the ancient Vedic scholar. Sesame oil is enriched with linoleic acid, and it has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it one of the most preferred oils to use for Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic self-massage. While the oil is used to treat versatile concerns, it is exceptionally moisturizing and recommended for those with Vata Dosha to keep the skin supple, soft and toned.
